Since its first issue dropped in April of 2021, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr has consistently received voracious applause. Landing on many “Best Of” 2021 lists while receiving heaps of praise for illustrator Filipe Andrade and accolades as one of the top up and coming writers for author Ram V, it’s even been favorably compared to Daytripper.
I’m happy to report that all of the glowing reviews and acclaim aren’t just hype – they’re well earned in this thought provoking and affecting series. Boom! Studios has recently released a deluxe hardcover of this great series that would make a fine addition to the shelves of collectors interested in the non-super hero comics space.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr follows Death after she’s cast out of her job and immortality. Inhabiting the mortal body of Laila Starr, she seeks out the cause of her unemployment: Darius, an infant who will one day discover the secret to immortality. Finding that it’s a lot harder to take a life now that she’s inhabiting the body of a mortal, Death must pursue her goal through multiple lifetimes. Each time she lives and dies is another opportunity to not only try and end Darius’ life before he can bring an end to death itself, but to also learn what it is to be mortal and all of the earthly trappings that come with it.
While Ram V’s script provides a strong foundation for a solid series, it’s Filipe Andrade’s illustrations that deliver on the promise of the premise. His line work embodies the fragility of life, the color palettes subtly hit the right emotional tones and his panel compositions breathe life into Death’s quest to end Darius’ life before he can discover immortality.
Featuring an introduction from Fábio Moon, the writer of Daytripper, and a handful of essays on the creative process between Ram V and his illustrator Andrade, the deluxe edition isn’t overflowing with bonus content but with a story as well constructed as The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, that’s hardly the point of adding this version to your collection. With high quality printing and binding, this is a release that will not only look great on your shelf but will hold up through multiple readings, which is essential as this is a series you’ll want to read more than once – each time diving deeper into the themes and beautiful illustrations.
